Curriculum

Wellbeing is explicitly embedded in our curriculum, with dedicated class time each week and a school-wide commitment to nurturing the whole child.
Weekly Time Allocation
We prioritise wellbeing with structured weekly class time across all year groups, delivered through Physical Education (PE), Games, and Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE):
-
K1 & K2: 2 hours 30 minutes per week
-
P1 & P2: 3 hours per week
-
P3–P6: 3 hours per week
This time is used to explore a wide range of age-appropriate topics and activities that support the physical, emotional, and social development of every child.
What the New Curriculum Framework Says
The new Primary Curriculum Framework places a strong emphasis on Being Well, one of its seven core competencies. At SACJS, we bring this competency to life in meaningful, developmentally appropriate ways. The curriculum encourages children to:
-
Be physically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually healthy
-
Build self-awareness, resilience, and a strong sense of self-worth
-
Value positive relationships, care for others, and engage respectfully with peers
-
Recognise the importance of physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices
-
Reflect on their choices, responsibilities, and role in the wider world
-
Explore values, citizenship, and ethical understanding
-
Develop a balanced and connected understanding of human relationships and sexuality
Through wellbeing-focused lessons, children also develop a sense of connectedness—to their classroom, school, family, and the broader community. We aim to instil in each pupil a deep appreciation of what it means to live well, care for others, and grow into a responsible, empathetic citizen.
Head of Wellbeing
Wellbeing is championed across our school by Ms Meadhbh Hassett, our Head of Wellbeing. She works closely with class teachers and the Support for Learning and pastoral teams to ensure that our approach to wellbeing is proactive, intentional, and inclusive. Ms Hassett also supports the development of staff training and wellbeing initiatives across the school community and works in close conjunction with the Senior School Wellbeng lead.
What Children Experience
Wellbeing lessons at SACJS include:
-
Physical Education & Games: Movement, coordination, fitness, teamwork, and a love of activity
-
SPHE lessons: Friendships, empathy, emotions, self-care, safety, citizenship, and relationships
-
Mindfulness and reflection: Guided opportunities to slow down, breathe, and build emotional regulation skills
-
Outdoor and nature-based learning: Encouraging a connection to the natural world and physical environment
-
Discussion and story-based learning: Using books and scenarios to explore values, identity, and problem-solving
These lessons are carefully tailored to meet the developmental needs of each year group and are supported by a school culture that promotes kindness, curiosity, and confidence.
By placing wellbeing at the centre of our curriculum, we equip children with the skills, language, and mindset to navigate life’s ups and downs with confidence and care. They leave SACJS not only academically prepared—but also emotionally aware, socially responsible, and ready to thrive in the world around them.
