Scifest/Young Scientist

Scifest is a science fair that takes place at the local, regional, and national levels. It began at St. Andrews in 2012 as a platform for second-year students to showcase their projects, conduct experiments, and research various topics with the goal of winning the prestigious Big Overall Winner trophy. This exciting event is held the week following their midterm break in November.
The winners of the second-year competition often go on to compete at the regional Scifest in TU Grangegorman, aiming for additional prizes and a chance to advance to the national finals. Many students kickstart their projects through Scifest and continue to develop them, eventually submitting them as one of the 550 projects showcased at the RDS during the Young Scientist Exhibition.
The Young Scientist Exhibition, now in its 61st year, has been a highly successful event for students from 2nd to 6th year. Over the course of four days in the first week of January, students compete across various categories, including Biological and Ecological Sciences, Physical and Chemical Sciences, Technology, Health and Wellbeing, and Social and Behavioural Sciences.
Our school has seen notable achievements over the years. In 2019, we were awarded Best School in the Republic of Ireland, and former pupil Yasmin Ryan received the Runner-up Best Individual Project award that same year.
In January 2025, two senior students, Niall Hennessy and Alois Plissoneau, excelled in the competition, each winning 1st place in their senior category. As a result, they were awarded incredible prizes—a trip to Osaka, Japan, in July. Only five such trips were available, making their achievement even more remarkable.
