Drama

Drama at St Andrew’s College
At St Andrew’s College, we offer a vibrant and dynamic drama program designed to inspire creativity and foster a passion for the theatrical arts. Our students are encouraged to explore a variety of disciplines within drama, from performance to directing and technical theatre. We take pride in our longstanding tradition of the One-Act Drama Festival, where students have the opportunity to showcase their skills and creativity. In addition to our festival, students can participate in the Drama Club, engage in Page-to-Stage Opportunities, and compete in Playwriting Competitions. Our students are also exposed to a range of specialised workshops in acting for stage and screen, direction, set design, hair and make-up, stage combat, blocking and movement, audition techniques, script analysis, lighting, and sound, allowing them to develop a broad range of theatrical skills. Drama is currently offered on the timetable of transition year students and as part of our first-year wellbeing rotations. To enrich their experience, we organise trips to watch professional theatre performances and invite industry experts and guest speakers, including our accomplished alumni who have gone on to build successful careers in the arts.
The Benefits of Curricular and Extra-Curricular Drama
Participating in curricular and extra-curricular drama activities at St Andrew’s College offers students a wealth of personal, social, and academic benefits. Drama enhances confidence, communication, and teamwork, as students work together to bring stories to life, whether on stage or behind the scenes. The One-Act Drama Festival and Drama Club allow students to take creative risks and gain valuable performance experience in a supportive environment. Extra-curricular opportunities such as workshops and playwriting competitions give students the chance to deepen their knowledge and refine their craft, while trips to professional theatre productions and visits from guest speakers broaden their understanding of the theatre world. The skills learned in drama – such as creative thinking, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence – are transferable to all aspects of life, providing students with an enriching and well-rounded education. Through these varied experiences, our students not only develop a deep appreciation for the arts but also build lifelong skills that will serve them in their future careers.
