Eco-Unesco Environmentalist Awards

What causes our plants to flower out of season?

This year two of our Transition Year Students, Olivia McKevitt and Matthew McCrea, entered  the Eco-Unesco Young Environmentalist Awards. This is the first time St Andrew's College has entered the competition.

“Our project is an awareness and action project on what causes unseasonal blooming of plants and how it impacts the environment around them e.g. the extinction of bees, crop destruction and biodiversity loss.

We came up with this idea because the two of us noticed that plants are blooming out of season and people are commenting on it more and more. Our goal was to spread awareness, educate people and conduct research.  It is a problem that people rarely see as being serious because, when most people think of global warming, an image of hotter and more extreme weather comes to mind. We want to show that global warming is more than that and that it affects every part of our planet.  We hope to continue this project after the awards and hopefully increase biodiversity in the school.

The two of us are working closely with Ms Hollwey to look after the new wormery, chickens and school garden.  We hope a small greenhouse can be installed in the school too sometime in the future.”

Best of luck to our students who will find out soon if they are through to the semi-finals.
