P6 STEAM Day

Some challenges for our P6 students

Wednesday 4 December was STEAM DAY in the Junior School.  STEAM stands for
Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths.

P6 enjoyed two collaborative challenges:

  1. To build a globe using 30 straws and a small ration of masking tape.
  2. To build a pyramid with 10 cups and place a small toy figure on top.  They were not allowed to use their hands to touch the cups.  They were also provided with 60cm of string, one elastic band each and two straws.

Each time they were successful, different materials were subsequently withdrawn.  The final challenge was to complete the task using only non-verbal communication - with very good levels of success.

The class had a lot of fun.  There was some follow-up testing and discussion about what they had each learnt.  All in all it was a very worthwhile and engaging task.
