Lorcán Miller

Lorcán Miller (1994-2015)

The St Andrew’s College community wishes to extend its deepest condolences to all the families of those involved in Tuesday’s tragic accident in Berkeley, California in which six young Irish students lost their lives. Our sincerest sympathies go particularly to the families of three of the victims: Lorcán Miller, who was a past pupil of the College; Olivia Burke, a niece of Board member Trish Wallace; and Ashley Donohue, a cousin of Olivia.

Lorcán was a pupil in St Andrew’s from 2006 to 2012. His teachers have fond memories of him and recall him as someone who was exceptionally likeable, very hard-working and academically gifted with an excellent command of Irish and French. He took part in all aspects of school life, academic and sporting. He was a talented hockey player and athlete. He was an enthusiastic participant in MUN conferences and was also a valued member of the Senior Choir. He enjoyed performing on stage in various College productions and his performance as Alfred Dolittle in ‘My Fair Lady’ is remembered with affection. His popularity and dedication to the College were reflected in his election as Deputy Head Boy, in which role he contributed enormously to the well-being of the pupils and the College.

Lorcán’s excellent Leaving Certificate results earned him an Entrance Scholarship to UCD where he was studying medicine. His many friends have spoken of how, given his qualities of intelligence, warmth and dedication, a career as a talented and caring doctor seemed a certainty. His generosity of spirit was evident in the fact that he maintained his links with St Andrew’s by returning regularly to help pupils in their preparations for HPAT assessments. In this, as in all areas, Lorcán gave without counting the cost and his contribution to the College is a debt we can acknowledge but never repay.

We join in the grief of all those who have lost a family member in this tragic event. To Lorcán’s mother, Sinead, and father, Ken, his siblings, Jamie, Lucy and Poppy and his extended family, we offer our heartfelt prayers.
